It is really difficult being an “early adopter” sometimes.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to know about (and sometimes own) the latest gadget and software inventions. I am glad I have an innate curiosity to know what’s out there and what’s next on the horizon.
But I’m often caught in the upgrade mindset. This is where I come to believe that my life is going to be better than ever if I can get my hands on the next big thing. I don’t want to miss out – and if I don’t get it…I kind of feel like I am. Which is where I find myself in regards to the iPad.
It came out just over a week ago and I find myself asking the question: Have I waited long enough?
At this point in the process, I usually have to engage in the pros and cons of the purchase. I’ll start to make lists in my head…
Pros: This thing is cool. Look at all of the cool things I’ll be able to do with it. Look how cool I will be when I have one of these cool devices in my hand. I can help other people decide if they should buy one by showing them how cool mine is.
Cons: I don’t really need one (that’s just painful to write).
Next step in the process is rationalization. For every “con” I list, I can give you a couple of good reasons or ways to get around it. I am so good at talking myself into these things. Maybe it’s not a sickness…maybe it’s just how I’m wired.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time reading the reviews of those who have jumped in and become iPad owners. Most everyone is pleased with their purchase at some level. So reading about other people’s experience isn’t going to help. Secondhand experience never satisfies the early adopter.
I guess the right question for me isn’t to buy or not to buy? The realistic question is when will I buy?
I promise that when I buy one, I’ll post some pictures and share my experience in a post.
What about you – are you going to buy an iPad? Why or why not?
